April’s Monthly Paid Subscription Post

When I first started the Hickory Algorithm newsletter it was because I needed to stop juggling all these different outlets.

YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter (it will always be twitter, Elon)..

I had conversations with the other small business owners I shared a space with about how exactly they keep track of all the posting on different platforms, and what success on those platforms looks like?

I listened to their advise which was…

“Followers.

Get more followers, on all the platforms.”

Ok, so I did. I didn’t spend a single AD dollar and focused on a boots on the ground kind of growth.

A painfully slow process, that left me questioning myself at every turn. Now with over 1k followers across all my platforms.

I did it! I got to 100 posts and 1k followers, now, where is my achievement?

No achievement.

I stand here with 100 posts under my belt, content for ages, and all the social media impact I can handle.

100 posts, 1k followers - these are big “achievement” numbers for a small business trying to fight an uphill battle in the current media climate.

Not giving into the meth and death news grabbing and click bait of the popularity of dirty laundry.

I wanted to focus on the good. Sometimes that is not what people are putting into their algorithm. Filling up on the negative things around us.

The great people, businesses, and stories behind what makes this community great.

I keep waiting for an achievement to pop up, like they do on video game consoles when you unlock something hard to do.

It’s never going to come.

I don’t think chasing followers really matters that much.
