Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To
Taking care of yourself isn’t just about exercise, rest, or eating right. It’s about feeding your soul. It’s about giving yourself something to look forward to.
For me, that something has always been concerts.
We’re officially in concert season, and I couldn’t be more excited. There’s something magical about live music. Standing in a crowd of people. Wearing your favorite band shirt. Singing the lyrics like a gospel. A great concert stays with you, not just for the night, but for days. It lingers. You walk a little lighter, your mind clears, and you feel… connected.
Last Friday, we hosted our first Be a Better Networker event with Hickory Algorithm. And when the dust settled and the connections were made, I found myself asking one of the attendees, “You going to the show next week?” It wasn’t about just the music—it was about sharing a moment. About stepping out of business mode and into something that fills your bucket.
Excitable (a Def Leppard tribute band) is playing at the Hickory Premier. I knew they were a big Def Leppard fan so I was hoping they would be there. I love seeing someone across the venue you haven’t seen in a while or someone you didn’t expect to see and you just think, “Huh. I had no idea.” Better yet, singing it as a group - together. That’s the connective tissue. The crossover between professional and personal lives. That’s where the good stuff happens.
I believe in mental health not just through quiet meditation or gym workouts, but in full-volume, scream-the-chorus, music-fueled joy. A good concert makes the next day better. A great one becomes a story. An incredible one becomes a core memory.
In this rollercoaster of life, we all need something to look forward to. A concert on the calendar. A night with friends. A show that shakes the dust off. If you don’t have something lined up, change that, see how it feels. Start small, or go big. But have something to look forward to.
