Sometimes the best business relationships start with a simple cup of coffee and in this case, it was a Friday Morning Brew with the Chamber of Commerce where I first met Matt Grimm, the owner of Tommy’s Express Car Wash in Hickory.
A week later, I invited him to visit a BNI chapter—not to pitch, but to connect. He showed up, made connections, and even stayed afterward to learn more. From there, it turned into the kind of organic relationship I value most: the kind where business is the byproduct, not the goal.
Soon we were texting about great pizza spots in Charlotte and chatting about youth baseball, comparing notes on our outlook, parenting, and navigating life with kids who are passionate about sports. Before long, Tommy’s Express wasn’t just a project to support, it became a shared vision.
That’s what makes this collaboration special. It wasn’t forged through sales decks or cold calls—it grew out of conversations, community, and the small, personal moments that make Hickory- the best.
Now, as Tommy’s Express opens on Hwy 127, I see the fingerprints of that approach all over it. From the local contractors who built the wash to the raffle benefiting Safe Harbor, Matt didn’t just bring a franchise here—he built something that reflects the people and values of our town.
And it all started with a cup of coffee, a text about pizza, and two dads on different ballfields trying to do good work and raise good kids.
