Too Good to be True
By: Chris Goldby ∣ Hickory Algorithm
Good advertising costs good money.
A lot of the people I meet with every day see the cost of what an advertising campaign looks like and will give me that blank stare.
Like, are you serious?
Very serious.
Good advertising, good campaigns, and content creation cost money and that’s why most people give these type of advertising avenues to their kids, friends, and the cheapest options possible, who are hip to the scene.
They know the tik toks, they know the instas, they know the snaps.
I say. Good luck to you.
I also say, thank you. Because it makes people like me look that much better.
This isn’t a flex.
It’s to inform you that there is a cheap option, that you are missing.
I got something for you. Your boy is looking out for you here.
Anywhere from 100 bucks to 400 bucks - one time fee.
Sound do able? It is.
You can invest in something that has such an impact that many of the longer term campaigns can’t touch.
Impacting the whole house - kids, parents, and family members.
Invest in Youth Sports
If you have kids sponsor their team.
If your neighbor has kids on a team - ask who their sponsor is.
Investing in youth sports has an impact that’s almost impossible to measure.
For the last ten years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching youth teams. During that time, I’ve seen firsthand what sponsorships, community involvement, and local business support can do for kids, parents, and the towns they play for.
I’ve been lucky.
I had an owner back in Pittsburgh who sponsored every single sports team my kids have ever played on. Every season, every sport his company name - Mt. Washington Shop n Save - was there. And even now that my family lives in Hickory, he STILL sponsors my kids’ teams.
That’s loyalty. That’s impact.
When you’re coaching or watching your child play, and you look at the back of their jersey and see that company name, it sticks with you. It’s a subtle reminder that someone cared enough to invest in your child’s experience.
Seeing a business name on the backs of jerseys, in gyms, on banners, or on dugouts, it warms your heart doesn’t it?
Because you know that business isn’t just promoting itself. It’s putting kids on fields, giving them a chance to play, to belong, to learn teamwork, discipline, and confidence.
Pride in the Name on the Back
When I coach a team that has my company’s name on the jersey, there’s another layer of pride.
It’s not just about business visibility.
It’s about ownership in the development of these kids. 💪
That jersey travels to multiple schools, parks, and fields across the region. Parents see it. Grandparents see it. Local fans see it.
And don’t think people don’t take notice?
They do. You do. We all do.
You remember the businesses that step up. You talk about them. You tell people where you got your haircut, who fixed your roof, or who sponsored your kid’s soccer team. Those impressions stay with you for years, because they’re tied to something bigger than commerce, they’re tied to memories.
It’s Not About the Elite Teams
I’m not talking about the “elite” travel teams that cost thousands of dollars a year to fund. Those programs have their place, but that’s not where the heart of community impact lives.
I’m talking about high school teams, middle school programs, and especially recreation (REC) leagues.
Those are the real pipelines of community growth.
Those kids aren’t chasing scholarships or sponsorships they’re chasing the simple joy of playing. They don’t toss their jerseys in the trash when the season ends.
They keep them. They wear them. They remember who helped them get there.
I still have every coaching jersey I’ve ever worn hanging in my closet and over half of them have the same sponsor: Mt. Washington Shop ‘n Save.
My kids still have their jerseys. Every year when we go to clean out their closest because they are becoming the size of giants they never want to get rid of them.
Impact.
Sponsoring a team for one season is great.
But you know what’s even more powerful? When that sponsorship becomes part of a tradition.
I’ve seen kids grow up wearing the same sponsor’s name on their backs for years and when they finally reach working age, they end up getting jobs with those same businesses that sponsored their team!
That’s the full circle.
That’s the impact.
Because it’s not just about the kids. It’s about the families who remember who stepped up, the parents who spread the word, and the community that begins to associate that company’s name with generosity, support, and trust.
When you invest in youth sports, you’re not just putting your logo on a T-shirt. You’re helping build the next generation of leaders, teammates, and citizens.
You’re teaching kids that they’re worth investing in.
And the best part? It doesn’t take thousands of dollars to make that difference.
A single sponsorship for a season — often just a few hundred dollars — provides jerseys, equipment, and opportunities for kids.
In return, your business name becomes part of their story.
It’s marketing that matters. But more importantly, it’s impact that lasts.
So if you’re looking for a way to make a real difference — not just in business, but in the lives of families around you but don’t have the budget for a large campaign.
Invest in local youth sports.
It’s affordable.
It’s meaningful. And it’s one of the best returns you’ll ever get.
Invest in youth sports.
It’s almost too good to be true.
