This Week the Hickory Algorithm takes a couple steps into the new year. A new addition to the newsletter, a focus on things we aren’t good at, and help you start 2025 off quietly - for yourself.
Don’t put a tool in your boys hands because you will be disappointed. On the video pod this week we hang out with Chris Parsons of Pace Atlantic LLC. He is also featured in our new addition to our newsletter with a Round Table article.
The audio Pod talks about ways to help you stand on a solid foundation of schedule making, prioritizing during schedule making, and how we spin our plates trying to get a solid schedule for 2025 or just a week 😉

Chris Parsons from Pace Atlantic LLC joins us to discuss his general contracting work, and the many licenses he has including GC, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical. Pace Atlantic LLC focuses on commercial maintenance, repairs, and residential remodeling.
Having a good GC and one that has these other licenses makes me think back to my 24 years in the grocery business. The last 11 years as the store manager and the amount of “cooler light is out, Chris” that I have heard is quite a bit. Now, that may seem like one light was just out a long period of time but, in rooms that have refrigeration/freezing units - light devices aren’t long for that world. Having a GC that can do all the things is such a great piece of mind as a business owner.
💡Round Table 💡
Round Table features an expert guest from The Hickory Algorithm podcast, offering them the opportunity to write an exclusive article for our weekly newsletter. 💡Should I try to DIY?💡
by: Chris Parsons of Pace Atlantic LLC
Have you ever tried a DIY project that just didn’t go the way you expected? In the days of reality TV shows on flipping houses, one that we enjoy in our family is Renovation Realities. Most of the time a couple takes a week off work, starts to demo their kitchen and quickly realize that one week isn’t enough time to make it happen. It’s often hilarious to watch as some people don’t know how the use the tools, are scared to swing the sledge hammer or get electrocuted. Despite our lack of experience many of us just have an itch to try it ourselves. If you’ve gotten the DIY bug from Pinterest, Instagram, or HGTV, here a couple questions to ask yourself to see if it’s a project you should try yourself or if you should call the pro’s:
Do I know how to use the tools needed?
Do I have any experience doing something like this?
Do I know what to do if I run into issues?
What am I going to do if I can’t fix the power, water, heat/air, an opening in my roof, lights in my kitchen, a window or door I opened or took down and can’t put back?
If you aren’t fairly confident after thinking through these questions then I recommend calling a professional and getting some advice.
Give us a call at 828-320-5810 if you’re unsure and if you choose DIY good luck!

Thank you to Chris Parsons for this week’s Round Table. I feel maybe he was speaking directly to me about it about that just might be my conscience.
🚨New Friday Pod 🚨
Episode 5.5: Scheduling <~~~~ LINK
Our Friday Pod builds off of last week with my son, Jacob. He asked me questions about the Hickory Algorithm, life, and goals for the coming year. This episode we focus on how to complete those goals. The first step, scheduling.
Scheduling has been a weekly ritual for me for the last 20 years. Every Friday I would sit at my desk and go over the next week. I would have budgeted hours for the employees and have to delegate those out to department heads but I always enjoyed making my schedules.
In management you would delegate those hours with every hour being allotted for with coverage. God forbid you miss an hour, a call off, or vacancy because it will feel like the whole world knows about it. So, fill in the schedule with hot spots according to events happening at your business. I’m an old grocery store guy so things like truck days, sales, promotions, and daily hot spots like 3-7 after work but besides that it can feel pretty ordinary and the potential to write the same schedule is a task most people fall into.
Business for yourself? Well, now that’s a whole new kind of schedule making. Family events, appointment, short term goals, networking, long term goals, selling, and its all got to be done by you. There is no post the schedule outside your office and be done. It is constantly changing. The podcast this week dives into this a little more in depth.
💢Attack the STACK!
The new year has begun! I hope you had a great 2024 but, you know 2025 is gonna be whats up 💪. Take this time to make sure all your loose ends are finished up because we are IN the New year. May all your reciepts be noted, folders all cleaned up, and random notes find their homes. The quality work you put into 2024 shouldn’t be forgotten but learned from and making sure your chaos takes the next step in the process in your work is key to day to day progress.
As business owners we have to make sure every loose end is accounted for. 💢Attack the STACK, of papers on your desk you have been procrasinating. That maybe pile of business cards? That maybe pile of friends who maybe leads? Leads that for whatever reason you don’t want to call? Networking events that seem dry and time wasting - revisit. The worst case that happens is you are around a few like minded folks. The STACK of papers on your desk get so big what do we do with them? Throw it all away. Not today, not never.
Attack the STACK, make it a goal for you today - matter of fact - I’ll give you MONDAY but it HAS to be put on your calendar right now! Once this newsletter is send, Your boy, is 💢Attacking the STACK as you read this.
The Battle isn’t outside sources, the battle, it is within.
