Purpose in Motion: Coaching, Leadership, and the Next Generation
ABOVE: Chris (Coaching Algorithm, w/Son). I did not choose Yankees. 😆
Last week, we talked about purpose—the unseen force that pulls us forward, connects us, and defines our direction. This week, I want to show you what that purpose looks like when it’s wearing cleats and sitting in a high school classroom.
I coach 15U REC Baseball here in Hickory, and I’ve got three teenage boys of my own. So when I say purpose can be found in a dugout, I mean it. Coaching isn’t just about lineups or pitch counts—it’s about building confidence, accountability, and connection. It’s about teaching kids how to show up—for themselves and for others.
What happens on that field ripples out into life. A coach’s words can echo years later. The effort a player puts in today can shape who they become as a friend, a student, an employee, even a parent. Coaching gives us a front-row seat to growth—and a responsibility to guide it well.
But purpose doesn’t end at the final out.
Through the Strong Student leadership program, I also get to help high school juniors and seniors prepare for life beyond graduation. It’s about real-world readiness: financial literacy, communication skills, personal growth, and decision-making. These young adults are about to take the wheel—and Strong Student helps make sure they’re not just driving, but driving with direction.
Both of these roles—on the field and in the classroom—are part of The Hickory Algorithm’s purpose. Because to build a better community, we have to invest in the people who are going to inherit it. That’s why I show up. That’s why this matters.
Purpose isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it looks like tossing batting practice. Sometimes, it looks like sitting in a classroom with teenagers and talking about what they want from life. But every time—it’s an opportunity to lead with heart, build something lasting, and show young people that who they are becoming is just as important as what they are doing.
That’s purpose. That’s my Algorithm helping them find, their own, personal Algorithm through life.
